27 DIY Obstacle Courses for Kids That Anyone Can Build

1. Box Tunnels

A simple, cost-effective project that you can start off with is creating box tunnels. All you need are some old cardboard boxes lying around your house. You may use shipping boxes, appliance boxes, or any large-sized cartons which are still sturdy and not worn out yet.

Kids absolutely love crawling through tunnels. More likely than not, they will find glorious adventures and magical journeys emerging from this humble obstacle. Additionally, this activity will help them develop their motor skills in a fun way.

Getting the right size for your child is essential. The box should be big enough to comfortably fit your child but it will also need to be small enough to offer a challenge and require them to crawl or squirm their way through.

Fancy setting up a box tunnel? Start by taking several boxes and cutting both ends open. Next, you arrange these boxes into a winding path. You could even make a long straight tunnel if you have limited space. For added enjoyment, you can decorate the boxes with colored papers, stickers, or draw on windows and doors.

  • Materials Needed: Cardboard boxes, Scissors, Decorative materials (optional)
  • Suitable for Age Group: Toddlers, Preschoolers
  • Skills Developed: Motor skills, Creativity
  • Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Estimated Time to Complete: 60 minutes
  • Fun Scale: 4/5

2. Sack Races

If you’re looking for a fun and exciting activity that requires minimal setup, consider planning a sack race as part of your homemade obstacle course. Sack races have been a favorite among kids and adults alike for decades, and they’re sure to bring plenty of laughter and fun, along with a loyalty sense of friendly competition.

Apart from being pure fun, sack races also allow children to develop their coordination and balance skills. They have to hop to move forward whilst keeping their equilibrium, not an easy feat!

For this activity, all you need are some old sacks or pillowcases large enough for the kids to fit in. If you do not have sacks, you can make your own by sewing together older sheets or fabrics.

Pull out some old sacks or pillowcases, and have the kids stand inside them at one end of a marked track. Once everyone’s ready, the race is on! They must hop their way to the finish line as fast as they can. This can be done individually or in teams, depending on how many kids are participating.

  • Materials Needed: Sacks or Pillowcases, Start/Finish markers
  • Suitable for Age Group: Preschoolers, School-age kids
  • Skills Developed: Coordination, Balance
  • Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Estimated Time to Complete: 30 minutes
  • Fun Scale: 5/5

3. Water Balloon Toss

On a hot day, adding a water balloon toss to your obstacle course could be a chillingly good idea. It’s exciting and includes elements of surprise, dexterity, and of course, lots of splashes.

First off, prepare plenty of colorful water balloons before starting the game, which can be a fun activity on its own. Keep the balloons small enough so kids can easily throw and catch them; however, remember that younger children may need larger targets to improve their chances of success.

Water balloon toss not only provides cool relief on a hot summer day but also improves coordination and fine motor skills. The unexpected bursts can stimulate sensory experience and teach children about cause and effect while keeping them entertained.

To prepare, fill up a bucket with water balloons at the start line. Kids have to run to the bucket, pick up a water balloon, and toss it into another bucket set at a certain distance. If they miss, they’ll have to go back to the start to get another balloon. Repeat until all balloons are used.

  • Materials Needed: Water Balloons, Two Buckets
  • Suitable for Age Group: School-age kids
  • Skills Developed: Coordination, Fine Motor Skills
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Estimated Time to Complete: 45 minutes
  • Fun Scale: 5/5
